Can dogs eat canned tuna packed in water occasionally?

While an occasional bite of plain, canned tuna packed in water is unlikely to hurt your dog, it's not a good idea to feed it to them regularly. Tuna is high in mercury, and over time, this can lead to mercury poisoning in dogs. Symptoms of mercury poisoning can include:

* Ataxia (loss of coordination)

* Blindness

* Deafness

* Kidney damage

* Neurological problems

* Seizures

* Tremors

In addition, tuna packed in water is often very salty, which can be harmful to dogs. Too much salt can lead to dehydration, high blood pressure, and other health problems.

If you want to give your dog fish, it's best to stick to low-mercury fish, such as salmon, tilapia, or anchovies. These fish are still healthy for dogs and are less likely to cause mercury poisoning. You can either cook the fish yourself or choose commercially-prepared fish that is specifically designed for dogs. Just be sure to avoid fish that are canned in oil, as the oil can be harmful to dogs.
