Signs your dog is about to have puppies:
Early Signs (a few weeks before):
* Swollen vulva: Her vulva will become significantly larger and may even appear red or pink.
* Milk production: You may notice small amounts of milk leaking from her nipples.
* Nesting behavior: She may start digging in corners, gathering blankets, or trying to create a nest.
* Weight gain: She will continue to gain weight, even after reaching her peak weight.
* Restlessness: She may seem more restless or agitated than usual.
* Increased appetite: Her appetite might increase, and she may crave certain foods.
Late Signs (within a few days or hours):
* Rectal temperature drop: Her temperature will normally drop below 100.5°F (38°C) about 12-24 hours before labor begins.
* Discharge: A clear or slightly bloody discharge may appear from her vulva.
* Contractions: She will experience strong, rhythmic contractions in her abdomen and may whimper or pant.
* Water breaking: A clear, watery fluid may leak from her vulva.
Call your vet immediately if you notice:
* Excessive bleeding
* Prolonged labor (more than 2 hours between puppies)
* Signs of distress (panting, whimpering, restlessness)
* The puppy appears stuck or isn't breathing
Remember: These are just general signs, and your dog's pregnancy may differ slightly. It's crucial to keep close contact with your vet throughout the process.
