Whiskers are called vibrissae, and they are specialized hairs found primarily on the face of mammals, including dogs. They are much thicker and stiffer than regular fur, and have a special nerve connection that allows them to sense changes in air pressure and movement. This helps the dog with:
* Navigation: They act like "feelers" to help the dog navigate in the dark or in tight spaces.
* Prey Detection: They are very sensitive to movement and can help the dog detect prey even if it's hidden.
* Social Communication: Whiskers can also communicate the dog's emotional state, such as fear or aggression.
While some breeds might have longer hair on their legs, these are not true whiskers and serve no sensory function.
