Killing Fleas in Carpet

There are over 2,000 described species of fleas in the world, but only about a dozen adversely affect humans and their companion animals, explains the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. Dog and cat owners may be all too familiar with the annoying problem of fleas congregating in carpet, but you can safely eliminate fleas and keep them from coming back.

Vacuuming carpet thoroughly will remove about 60 percent of flea eggs, explains the Alabama Cooperative Extensive System. Use vacuum attachments like hoses and brushes to get into carpet corners. Toss out the used vacuum bag in an outdoor garbage can when finished. Steam cleaning will kill most of the fleas who've taken up residence in your carpet.

Spray conventional insecticides over flea-infested carpet. Most newer insecticides are safe to use; just be sure to exactly follow label directions. Repeat the treatment in three weeks to eradicate fleas that were in the pupal stage -- the period when the insect is still developing inside a cocoon -- during the first treatment.

Bathe your dog or cat with shampoo or a mild detergent to remove fleas and prevent additional fleas from finding their way back into your carpet. The fleas will naturally drown in the bath water. Groom your pet with a flea comb daily. Place the flea-infested comb in soapy water and throw it away. Talk to your veterinarian about effective flea and tick collars for your pet.
