Instructions
Locate a place for the sandbox. Find an area of the yard that is flat and where the dog typically plays.
Mark the spot for the sandbox with twine. Using a tape measure, measure 6 feet by 6 feet (for this example, but the sandbox can be any size you want). Using wooden stakes, mark the corners and string twine from one stake to the next, forming a box.
Dig up the area. Dig down 6 inches and level the area inside the twine.
Cover with landscape fabric. Stretch landscape fabric over the hole and push it to the ground so it lies flat. It will keep weeds and grass from growing up into the sand.
Cut the timbers. Measure the desired length, and subtract 3½ inches from each piece. This is the actual width of a 4 by 4. Using a circular saw cut 12 timbers each 5 feet 8½ inches.
Add timbers and secure. Layer two levels of 4 by 4 cedar timbers on top of each other, with the first layer below grade and holding the fabric in place. Arrange the timbers end-to-end at the corners. Secure the first two layers together with 6-inch timber screws through the timbers every 3 feet around the foundation.
Add the top layer of timbers, securing it to the lower levels with 6-inch timber screws.
Fill the box with fine play sand 6 inches deep.
