How to Deodorize My Furniture from Dog Smell

Some dogs give off a natural odor you may not find to your liking. Other dogs give off strong odors when not bathed or when wet. Still other dogs, spread odors around a home if they go to the bathroom indoors without your knowledge. Porous fabrics and furnishings absorb odors from dogs more than hard surfaces, so you may notice a distinct dog smell on your couches, chairs and other furniture. Deodorize your furniture regularly so you can enjoy clean, fresh furnishings.

Instructions

    • 1

Sprinkle baking soda liberally over any fabric-covered furniture. Allow the baking soda to sit at least 10 minutes. If the dog odor is especially strong, let the baking soda sit overnight. Keep your dog off the furniture at this time. The baking soda won't harm the dog, but the dog may make a mess.

Vacuum the baking soda away with a brush attachment. If the odor only lightly permeates the furniture, the baking soda will erase any traces of odor. If the odor persists, continue.

    • 3

Shake baking soda over the furniture. Take a scrub brush and work the baking soda into the fibers in a circular motion. Allow the fabric to sit overnight. Vacuum away the baking soda in the morning with a brush attachment. If the odor persists, continue.

Deep clean the fabric coverings with a wet vacuum's brush attachment. Allow the furniture to dry overnight.

Spray the furniture with pet-safe odor neutralizer spray. Use the spray on both fabric and hard portions of furniture, so long as the bottle says that you can use the cleaner on fabrics, wood and other surfaces. Test a sample of the spray on the furniture in an obscure spot to be sure it doesn't cause the fabric dye to bleed.
