Reindeer Dog Bone Crafts

When the winter holidays approach, it is time to get creative and crafty. Many different materials can be used to make holiday craft items, such as reindeers. However, rather than making the traditional reindeer out of paper plates or other common materials, do something different by making reindeers out of dog bones. Dog bones are inexpensive and may already be laying around your house.
  1. Reindeer Ornament

    • Make a reindeer ornament to hang on a Christmas tree by decorating a dog bone to look like a reindeer. Flip the dog bone so that it is vertical on your working surface. The top of the dog bone will be where the reindeer's eyes and antlers go, and the bottom of the bone is where the reindeer's mouth will be. Use a dark brown chenille stick to glue at the top of the bone as the antlers. Bend the chenille stick to make the antlers curve slightly away from one another. Glue googly eyes at the top of the bone and a small red pompom to the very bottom of the bone. Make the pompom larger than the googly eyes. Glue a loop of string to the back side of the bone, which is the string used for hanging the reindeer ornament.

    Cooking Craft

    • A Christmas craft for the kitchen is to bake dog bones in the shape of reindeers. Find a suitable dog treat recipe that does not contain too much sugar or fats, since these ingredients are not healthy for dogs. Spread the cookie batter out into a thin layer on a cookie sheet. Use a reindeer-shaped cookie cutter to press into the batter, cutting out the individual reindeer cookies. Bake and decorate the cookies with green and red icing when they cool to make them look like reindeers.

    Dog Bone Stocking

    • You can make a holiday stocking for a dog that is in the shape of a bone, and decorated to look like a reindeer. Use green or red felt to trace the dog bone shape onto and cut out two sides that you hand stitch or glue together. The bottom must be closed shut, but the top of the stocking remains open. Draw reindeer antlers out of brown felt, which you glue to the top of the stocking and give the reindeer a large brown nose at the bottom of the stocking. Googly eyes can be glued on, or you can draw the eyes on yourself. Embellish by adding a red tongue that hangs out of the reindeer's mouth.

    Glue the Bones

    • A glue-the-bones project involves gluing multiple types of dog bones onto sturdy paper, such as poster board or foam board, and making them into the shape of a reindeer's head. Start by gluing a rawhide bone that is completely round. This is the reindeer's face. Glue smaller treat bones up from the top of the reindeer's face in various directions to make the antlers. Use a small liver treat to glue down in the face as the reindeer's nose. Liver treats are usually dark brown, which is an ideal nose color for a reindeer. Googly eyes can be glued on, or else you can draw them.
