How to Get My CKC Papers

Registration papers are no guarantee of quality. Registered dogs and unregistered dogs have the same genetic qualities or genetic flaws. Registration with a reputable canine registry provides the owner with the knowledge that the puppy has a known sire and a known dam and that both have known ancestors behind them, all of whom are registered as well. Registration papers from a registry that will provide papers for a fee, regardless of the puppy's quality or parentage, provide papers with little value at all. Two registries known as the "CKC" exist. One is the Canadian Kennel Club. The other is the Continental Club. Here are the instructions for getting the papers from each.

Instructions

  1. Canadian Kennel Club: Dogs Born in Canada

    • 1

Purchase a puppy from a breeder that registers his dogs with the Canadian Kennel Club. Only litters produced from a Canadian Kennel Club-registered dam can be litter registered, although the sire can be registered with a recognized foreign club, such as the AKC or The Kennel Club, of the U.K. Litter registration is the first step toward receiving an individual registration certificate for your dog.

    • 2

Obtain the litter-registered puppy's individual registration form from the breeder.

    • 3

Fill out the dog's registered name on the form, conforming to the Canadian Kennel Club's registration requirements. Among other requirements, the dog's name should begin with the breeder's kennel name and must not exceed 30 characters.

    • 4

Return the application to the breeder, accompanied by the required fees. The breeder must mail the application to the Canadian Kennel Club. According to the Canadian Kennel Club, it takes seven to 10 days for the registration to be processed and for the Certificate of Registration to be mailed to the breeder.

    • 5

Obtain the Certificate of Registration from the breeder.

Canadian Kennel Club: Dogs Owned in the United States

    • 6

Provide permanent identification for the dog, either in the form of a microchip or a tattoo.

    • 7

Fill out the "Registration of AKC Registered Dog Owned by a Resident of the USA" form. All sections, including those for permanent identification, must be completed.

    • 8

Make a copy of the dog's AKC registration form and the dog's certified pedigree.

    • 9

Mail the application and the copies of the registration form and pedigree, along with the correct fee, to the Canadian Kennel Club.

    Continental Kennel Club

    • 10

Obtain a registration form from the Continental Kennel Club. It is available from the club or online.

    • 11

Complete the first two sections with information about the dog and the owner. The owner and, if applicable, the co-owner must sign in the appropriate areas.

    • 12

Complete either the "Parents" or the "Witness" section of the registration sheet. If filling out the "Parents" section, provide the sire and dam's Continental Kennel Club registration numbers. If filling out the "Witness" section, provide three photographs of the dog with the application. Two witnesses must sign the form, if the Witness section is used.

    • 13

Mail the completed application and applicable fee to the Continental Kennel Club. Include the required photographs as needed.
