How to Move Out of State With Dogs

Moving away from a familiar home, no matter the distance, can be traumatic for your dog. Therefore, it is important that you take every precaution to make sure your pet is safe and comfortable on the trip as well as ensuring that you are following proper procedures for bringing it into another state. A few precautions will help make your move go as smoothly as possible for both you and your dog.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a current paper copy of your dog's medical records, including a health certificate and proof of rabies vaccination, from its veterinarian. Keep it in the glove compartment of your car to show authorities at state-line checkpoints if necessary.

    • 2

Update your pet's identification tags and/or microchips with your new address. If you lose your dog en route, you will want him to be tagged with the correct information.

    • 3

Contact the Department of Animal Husbandry in the state you are moving to to obtain requirements for bringing new animals into the state.

    • 4

Keep your dog in a place with a comfortable temperature, such as the car you are driving. Do not allow it to travel in the back of a moving van or a car that is being towed because extreme temperatures may be fatal. Give your dog fresh air and a chance to stretch its legs about every two hours.

    • 5

Check your moving route for rest stops that allow pets and plan your stops accordingly. It will be easier on your dog if you can maintain its walking and feeding schedule as much as possible, even while on the road. Don't forget the basics, such as a leash and a waste scooper.

    • 6

Bring your dog's normal feeding dishes as well as the food it is used to. Put a blanket that smells familiar in the crate with it or on the seat where it will be lying.

    • 7

Keep your dog contained for a while when you reach your destination. It is likely to be a little disoriented with the chaos of moving and will need time to explore the area under your supervision before you should let it off the leash. Designate a quiet space for your dog with its favorite things until you have the house set up.
