How to Mount a Doggy Door in French Doors

Doggy doors for French doors usually have to be custom made. Doggy doors are traditionally mounted into wooden doors or attached to the end of a glass sliding door, but they can also be installed in a French door. A doggy door allows you to leave your best friend knowing that he will not soil your home. Provided the doggy door opens into a fenced run, a house-trained dog can safely go outside any time he needs to do so.

Measure your existing glass panes and write down the measurements. Then measure the height of your dog from the floor to the top of his shoulders and measure across his chest to get his width. Use these measurements to determine the size of the door flap within the doggy door's frame. The actual door including the frame will be about two inches wider and two inches higher than these measurements. Contact a custom doggy door manufacturer and order the door to be made to best fit your dog and your door.

Remove one glass panel. Pry the trim off the inside of the door using a prying tool. Slide the end of the tool under the trim and tap the head gently until the trim loosens. Remove the trim around all four sides of the glass on the inside of the door. If the pane is secured with fasteners, pry them off, and carefully slide the pane out of the door. For large dogs you may have to remove two or more panes, but make certain the door will not collapse before you do so.
