How to Show a Bulldog

The bulldog is an easily recognizable breed of heavy-set dog with wrinkled faces and broad shoulders. As an AKC registered breed, bulldogs are frequently seen at dog shows. In order to be successful in the show ring, your bulldog needs to compare favorably to the AKC breed standard. A copy of the standard is available at the AKC website. Unlike some breeds, the bulldog does not require a lot of preparation in order to be ready for the show ring.

Instructions

    • 1

Find out as much as you can about dog shows before entering your bulldog. Attend a dog show in your area and observe the way bulldogs are shown and judged. Speak to handlers and breeders to learn more about their experiences in the show ring.

    • 2

Adequately train and socialize your bulldog for the show ring. In order to show, your bulldog must heel without tension on the leash. Furthermore, your bulldog must stand still and allow itself to be physically examined by a stranger without growling or snapping. Also, your dog must tolerate other dogs without aggression.

    • 3

Do the necessary grooming before show day. Brush your bulldog and make sure all its wrinkles are clean as well as the inside of its ears.

    • 4

Dress professionally for the show ring, but don't draw attention to yourself and away from the dog.

    • 5

On show day, take plenty of water for your dog and a crate to keep it in when not in the show ring.
