Instructions

    • 1

Consult your veterinarian on any special health precautions you should take with your dog before determining whether the dog is physically up to a long flight.

    • 2

Contact the airline to determine what requirements they have of traveling pets. Some smaller dogs are allowed inside the cabin in a soft carrier. Determine which type of traveling container the airline will allow your dog to travel in.

    • 3

Send two vaccination certificates, a health certificate and a completed dog and cat import form to Hawaii Animal Quarantine Station 10 days prior to arrival.

    • 4

Stop feeding the dog a few hours before leaving for airport. Dogs can get sick if they eat close to takeoff.

    • 5

Set up the carrier and dog for the long distance flight in cargo area with toys and a blanket.

    • 6

Freeze water in a dish and place it in the carrier. This will allow dog to drink water during pre-flight and flight.

    • 7

Place a small amount of food in the carrier for the dog to eat during the flight.

    • 8

Tape a bag of food outside the carrier in the case of a delay. A flight attendant can alert an airport employee to feed the dog in the case of a delay.

    • 9

Allow the Hawaii Animal Quarantine station to take the dog upon arrival. Hawaii ensures that all dogs are rabies-free before allowing them to live in the state. Quarantines can take five days or less if requirements are met. If not, the dog may be quarantined for 120 days or longer.
