How to Get a Dog to Stop Waking Early in the Morning

Dog owners may grow frustrated with a canine companion's waking habits if earlier than the owner's alarm clock. Unfortunately, the snooze button won't detract your dog from licking your face and letting you know that it is time to play in the morning. If you find that you aren't getting enough sleep in the mornings, get your dog into a morning routine that works for both of you.

Instructions

    • 1

Promote a dark, low stimuli atmosphere in the bedroom by keeping drapes closed and the television off. Play classical music or white noise through a boom box at a low volume.

    • 2

Place a crate in your bedroom for your dog to sleep in and cover the crate with a blanket after you close it up at night.

    • 3

Walk your dog often during the day and take a long walk together every night right before you go to bed.

    • 4

Train your dog to sleep later by setting alarm clock cues. If you sleep until 7:00 and your dog wakes at 6:45, set the alarm for 6:40 for a week and then 6:45 the next week. Continue to move the weekly wake up time five minutes forward until you are both waking up at 7:00. Do not leave your bed until the alarm sounds.

    • 5

Feed your dog a high quality blend of dog food earlier in the evening.
