How to Count Grand Champion Points

The American Kennel Club instituted the Grand Champion title in 2010, offering AKC's Champions of Record a new title to strive for and to encourage these quality dogs to continue competing. However, the points system used to determine a Grand Champion can be confusing, even to judges. Dogs winning Best of Breed, Best of Opposite Sex, Select Dog and Select Bitch in an approved show may be eligible for Grand Champion points.

  1. How to Calculate Grand Champion Points for Best of Breed

    • 1

Calculate Grand Champion points for Best of Breed by adding the number of dogs competing in the breed's regular classes (class dogs plus class bitches) to the number competing for Best of Breed. Then look up this total number on the schedule to determine the points awarded. For Best of Breed, whether a dog or bitch has won, the points awarded are the greater number. For example, an English Setter bitch wins Best of Breed in a California show. There were 6 dogs and 5 bitches in the class competitions, with 6 champions competing in Best of Breed, totaling 17 competitors. On the points schedule, the number of points awarded is 5 for dogs or 4 for bitches. However, as a Best of Breed winner, the bitch is awarded 5 points.

Calculate Grand Champion points for Best of Opposite Sex by adding the number of dogs of that sex competing in their regular class (class dogs or class bitches) to the number of that sex competing for Best of Breed. Look up this total number on the schedule to determine the points awarded for that sex. For example, an English Setter dog was awarded Best of Opposite Sex. There were 6 competitors in the class dog competition, with 3 champion dogs competing in Best of Breed for a total of 9. On the points schedule, the number of points awarded to dogs is 3.

Calculate Grand Champion points for Select Dog or Select Bitch by adding the number of dogs of that sex competing in their regular class (class dogs or class bitches) to the number of that sex competing for Best of Breed, then subtract 2. Look up this total number on the schedule to determine the points awarded for that sex. For example, both a Select Dog and Select Bitch were chosen by the judge. There were 6 competitors in the class dog competition, with 3 champion dogs competing in Best of Breed for a total of 9. Subtracting 2 leaves a total of 7, for which the schedule awards 3 points to the dog. There were 5 competitors in the class bitch competition, with 3 champion bitches competing in Best of Breed for a total of 9. Subtracting 2 leaves a total of 6, for which the schedule awards 2 points to the bitch.
