How Do I Get My Chihuahua's Ears to Stand Up Again?

Chihuahuas normally have ears that stand straight up, but it takes up to a year for them to do so. During the first year of life, your puppy's ears may go through periods of standing and periods of flopping. Gluing can encourage the ears to stand up. Taping is less well tolerated by puppies, who may chew it off. Cropping will also help, but is not allowed in the show ring. If your dog is over one year old and the ears suddenly flop, it may be due to broken cartilage. This is usually not painful for the dog, but the ears will remain floppy.

Instructions

    • 1

Shake the glue well and pour some onto the paper plate. Have your chihuahua sit in front of you with his head held straight. If the head is tilted even slightly, the ears may not come out even.

    • 2

Dip your finger into the glue, and spread it onto the outer edge of the front of your puppy's ear. Start at the tip and continue about 2/3 of the way down toward the base. Repeat with the other ear.

    • 3

Press both ears together and hold for at least 30 seconds. According to Ayer's Long Coat German Shepherds, the glue should hold for about four weeks, and if your puppy's ears still flop after the glue comes off, wait two or three days and reapply.

Reward your puppy with the treat for being so patient.
