How to End a Puppy's Over-Excitement

An over-excited puppy can exhibit a variety of undesirable behaviors, such as excessive barking and jumping up on family members or guests. As your puppy grows bigger, hyperactive behaviors can become more challenging to deal with, even hazardous: a puppy that grows into a large dog can knock over a small child. Your puppy may be over-excited because it is bored, trying to seek attention from you or simply full of energy, according to Cesar Milan. Put an end to your puppy's over-excited behavior by addressing the cause and by reacting in the correct way.

Instructions

    • 1

Take your puppy on a long walk every day to allow it to expend excess energy. First, attach the leash and wait quietly for the puppy to calm down completely before you go. Step outside before your puppy does and continue to walk slightly in front to show it that you are in charge. At the end of the walk make the puppy wait outside until all other family members have entered the house.

    • 2

Play with your puppy on a daily basis to provide an outlet for its energy and to prevent the puppy from becoming bored. Pent-up energy can trigger a puppy to become hyperactive and destructive.

    • 3

Ignore over-excited behavior, which could be your puppy's way of getting attention. For example, do not acknowledge the puppy when you enter the house. Walk in with a calm and confident manner and turn away from the puppy with your arms folded if it jumps up. Wait for the puppy to calm down completely before giving praise and affection.

Command your puppy to get in its bed and wait when guests arrive. Tell your guests to enter without touching, petting or making eye contact with the puppy. Inform them that they can give affection after five minutes, as long as the puppy is calm. Remove the puppy to another room if it jumps on your guests, barks or ignores your commands. After five minutes, bring it back into the room to greet guests, as long as it remains calm.

Act in a calm manner if you want your puppy to be calm; dogs can sense emotion and often will mirror them.

    • 6

Praise your puppy when it is acting calm so it knows what behavior is appropriate.
