How to Take Care of Collie Puppies

Collie puppies are well-known for their herding instincts. These medium size dogs come in various colors such as black, tri-color or black and white. There are two different types of the collie puppies, which are the rough-coated and the smooth-coated variety. The collie has the ability to endure any type of weather because of their dense coat. Just like any other type of puppies, collie puppies need special care. With these basic guidelines, you can give your puppies the care that they deserve.

Instructions

Keep your collie puppy coat clean by brushing it regularly. Use a coarse brush to brush your puppy's coat once or twice weekly. This will remove debris and prevent tangles, as well as keep it shine and healthy. Brushing should also be done before every bath session to prevent the matted hair from becoming unmanageable.

Give your collie puppy a bath whenever it is necessary. Use a pet shampoo and conditioner when bathing your puppy. Pour lukewarm water into a container and pour it slowly over the puppy's coat. Apply shampoo to his coat, while gently massaging it onto it. Rinse away the sud and apply conditioner. Pour sufficient water to rinse the coat thoroughly, then pat dry with a clean towel.

Clean your collie puppy teeth with a soft bristle toothbrush. Apply a small amount of toothpaste, made specifically for dogs, to the toothbrush. Gently brush the puppy's teeth, making sure to pay special attention to the back teeth, since they are more likely to have a buildup of plaque.

Wipe the inside of your puppy's ear with a damp cloth at least once a week. This will help to keep the ear canal free from wax. Check the ear canal for signs of infection such as a foul odor or any unusual fluids.

Trim your puppy's nail at least once per month using a dog nail clip. You may bring your dog to a professional dog groomer for his monthly trimming, if you don't feel comfortable doing it.
