Skunk Spray Removal

Recognized by their striped fur and putrid-smelling scent glands, skunks are nocturnal animals that feed on small fruits and animals at night. Skunks are known to take residence underneath decks, porches and virtually any available burrow. Although skunks are compliant by nature, they don't appreciate threatening animals such as rowdy dogs. Provoked skunks can fire a potent, oil-based secretion from their scent glands up to 15 feet toward the offending animal. Dogs coated with skunk spray generally smell repugnant and are unbearable to have around a yard or inside a home. Promptly remove skunk spray from dogs using basic products.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour 1 qt. of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide into a bowl. Using a spoon, mix 1/4 cup of baking soda and 1 tsp. of liquid dish-washing detergent into the hydrogen peroxide.

    • 2

Put on rubber gloves and old, long-sleeved clothing to prevent the oil-based secretion from transferring onto your skin.

    • 3

Pour the homemade odor-neutralizing solution liberally over the dog's entire body, except near his eyes and mouth. Message the solution thoroughly into the dog's fur.

    • 4

Rinse the odor-neutralizing solution off the dog's fur using a garden hose. Flush the dog's fur thoroughly with water.

    • 5

Dilute any leftover solution with 1 gallon of water. Pour the diluted solution down a household drain.
