How to Take Care of 5-Month-Old Puppies

Just like babies, puppies require plenty of care. While a 5-month-old puppy is still a baby, most breeds are big enough to get themselves in plenty of trouble. Puppies require patience, care and discipline in order to train them to be obedient dogs. Many people may get caught up in the cuteness, but it is important to enforce rules and provide the puppy with the necessities for them to grow into happy and healthy full-grown adult dogs.

Instructions

    • 1

Feed your puppy food manufactured specifically for puppies and of high quality, as indicated by reduced artificial additives, chemicals and low-grade ingredients, or as recommended by your local pet store. You want your puppy to be healthy, so what you put in their system is very important, especially as they are growing. Puppies should be fed a minimum of three times a day. Follow the instructions on the bag of food for portion sizes. Increase or decrease the amount of food based on the weight of the puppy and the suggested portion by weight.

    • 2

Give your puppy fresh water daily and throughout the day. Make sure the bowl is clean to prevent the water from being polluted and possibly causing the puppy to become ill.

    • 3

House train the puppy, teaching it to relieve itself in a specific area of the house. Each time you catch the puppy in the act of urination or excretion, pick the puppy up and place it in the designated area. Place newspaper down elsewhere in case the puppy has an accident during the house training process.

    • 4

Take the puppy outside after naps or after eating, because they tend to urinate after waking up or drinking water and defecate after eating. Praise the puppy with a treat after it has relieved itself outside.

    • 5

Crate the puppy or put a gate up in the area the puppy has to be confined when you are not able to supervise the puppy. Crating and gates will prevent the puppy from chewing on anything in their reach. Puppies like to chew on everything, so buying a chew toy is beneficial for you and the puppy.

Teach your puppy how to be obedient. Start with simple commands, for example, "Sit," "No," or "Down." Be sure to praise the puppy with a "Good girl" or "Good boy" after it has obeyed the command. Using treats as praise is known to be effective as well.
