How to Get a Puppy Out of Its Crate When it Doesn't Want to Come Out

A puppy naturally may want to hide in his crate, particularly if he has just joined your household. However, if the behavior continues, you may need to help him get over his shyness. Give the puppy plenty of encouragement, tempt him with treats and keep noise to a minimum to lure him out of hiding.

Instructions

Reassure the puppy. Talk to him gently and encourage him to come out of the crate, but do not force him.

    • 2

Administer treats to lure him out. Start by letting him eat the treat in the crate; next, place a treat just outside the crate. Then, hold out a treat for the puppy, praising him lavishly if he comes to you.

If the puppy refuses to come out, leave the treat just outside of the crate and ignore the puppy. At some point, he will come out. Avoid making sudden movements or loud noises when the puppy first ventures out, but do praise him.

    • 3

Ignore the puppy if he goes into the crate for quiet time; after all, that is part of the crate's function. Let him emerge when he's ready.

    • 4

Eliminate or reduce loud noises, which can increase the puppy's nervousness, causing him to want to hide.

    • 5

Investigate possible causes for the puppy's shyness if, after several days, he still refuses to come out. Domestic appliances, like vacuums and washing machines, might be frightening him. If you have children, make sure they aren't teasing him. Keep other pets at a distance until the puppy gains confidence.
