Grieving the Death of a Dog

Letting go of your dog is never easy for pet owners. After all, your pet may have been a part of your family for the last 10 or 15 years or maybe even longer. However, you should know that feeling sad, lonely, depressed or grief stricken are completely natural emotions to feel after your dog dies. If you can deal with these feelings in a healthy way and allow yourself sufficient time to grieve, you can get through this difficult time.

Instructions

    • 1

Express your grief in ways that make you feel comfortable. You might want to cry while looking through photos of your dog or watching videos. Allowing yourself to be upset is an important part of the grieving process.

    • 2

Talk with the people that are closest to you about the loss. Talking with people who understand and offer support can be an important part of grieving your dog.

    • 3

Contact your veterinarian or local animal shelter to see if there are pet loss hotlines or support groups in your area. Your local humane society may also be able to provide you with resources.

    • 4

Volunteer at your local animal shelter. Being around other dogs might help you through the grieving process, and you might also find the next member of you family.

    • 5

Give your existing pets lots of love and keep the same routine with them. This will help you with your grief and it will be good for your pets who may also be grieving the loss.
