Safety Items
-
Just as a baby needs a car seat for travel, your dog needs some form of safety restraint. Choose a harness that straps into the seat belt, a specialized car seat for dogs or a carrying kennel to protect it in the event of a sudden stop or other unexpected car movement. Your dog should also have its leash and collar with it at all times. These are important when you are far from home and Fido needs to take care of business. They also ensure that your dog will not escape through an open car window or door when the vehicle is stopped. A first aid kit is a good idea in case of a cut or splinter in your dog's paw.
Pet Records and Identification
-
You would never think of leaving home without your identification, and your dog shouldn't either. The dog license and identification tag should be securely attached to the collar on your pet in case it is lost. You should also carry a picture or two of your dog in your wallet in case it becomes lost. Packing a copy of the dog's medical and immunization records is also a good idea. Medical emergencies can happen unexpectedly, and having these records takes much of the guesswork out of diagnosing your dog if it becomes ill. If your pet takes medication, you should take an adequate supply as well as the prescription bottles from the veterinarian.
Food and Water
-
Your destination might have plenty of food and water for your dog, but it is important to have these items on hand while traveling. Pack an ample amount of your pooch's favorite food in a plastic container or large zip-lock bag. A gallon jug of water fits in the trunk or floorboard of the vehicle to quench your dog's thirst. Pet supply stores carry collapsible travel bowls for pets to use while traveling. These are a good investment if you travel frequently with your pet. If you are taking a cooler for drinks and food, pack extra ice for your dog. Ice is a good way to help your dog stay hydrated and cool it off during hot weather.
Miscellaneous Items
-
Take a few toys and treats for your dog. Play time is important after taking a long trip. Your dog will appreciate the exercise and fun. For sleeping and naps, take its favorite blanket or dog bed. Familiar items from home prevent your dog from feeling too much stress while away from its normal surroundings. Another important item is sunscreen. Many people don't think that their dog can get sunburned, but depending on your destination and weather during your travel, sunscreen could come in handy for its nose and ears. A flashlight with fresh batteries can guide your evening walks with Fido, especially in unfamiliar territory.

Packing List for Traveling With a Dog
People plan for travel well in advance. Hotel reservations, sightseeing agendas, maps of your driving route and even lists of what to pack are made long before your trip. If you are planning on taking your dog with you, include it in your plans. If you care enough about your pet to take it with you, a well-thought-out packing list for your furry friend should be no problem. You will enjoy your trip much more knowing your dog is comfortable and happy. Before taking your excursion, don't forget the necessary items for Fido.
