The Best Method for Cleaning a Dog Sprayed by a Skunk

Dogs are extremely inquisitive creatures, and they will often get themselves into trouble investigating animals around them. If one of these animals happens to be a skunk that isn't pleased with your dog's curiosity, it will let loose a sulfurous defense spray and coat your dog. This smell can be tricky to get out, and cleaning your dog immediately is a top priority.

Instructions

    • 1

Leave the dog outside to prevent odor from getting into your house.

    • 2

Put on old clothes, so you won't get the skunk smell on yourself.

    • 3

Trim as much as you can of your dog's hair where the spray hit.

    • 4

Soak up the skunk oil with paper towels. Do not wipe, simply press down.

Clean the sprayed area with skunk odor remover. You can purchase this at pet stores, but if you don't have it on hand, you can make one out of household ingredients. Combine one quart of three percent hydrogen peroxide, one-fourth cup of baking soda and one teaspoon of dish detergent. Allow the solution to remain on the dog for five to ten minutes.
