How to Find the History of Boxer Dogs

The boxer is a noble breed known for its high energy, courage and devotion to its owners. Although large, a well-bred, well-socialized boxer is gentle and patient with children and enjoys playing active backyard games with older ones. Since it's important to research any breed of dog before bringing one home, potential (and current) boxer owners would be wise to research the history of the breed before deciding whether a boxer is the right dog for them or not.

Search the Internet. The American Kennel Club website provides some basic history of the boxer breed, including its probable common ancestry with other breeds such as the bulldog and mastiff. Type "boxer history" into any search engine and you'll find hundreds of resources.

Check out books on boxers. Your local chain bookstore or public library should have boxer-specific books on the shelves. According to amazon.com, there is even a "Boxers for Dummies" book which, like other dog breed-related "Dummies" books, includes as much history as is verifiable about the breed.

Peruse an art museum. According to the American Kennel Club's boxer history information, ancestors of the breed were often depicted in Flemish (Belgian) tapestries in the 16th and 17th centuries. Since boxers became popular in 19th century Germany, a close look at the artwork from that period might show some glimpses into the breed's history.
