How to Help Puppies in Need

Animal shelters in every community are constantly overrun with unwanted and needy animals puppies. While a visit to one of these shelters can plant the seed in any animal lover's heart to adopt each and every animal, it is neither financially nor physically possible. Instead, there are many different ways you can help puppies in need.

Instructions

    • 1

Donate money to your local shelter or a reputable animal-welfare organization. Monetary donations are the life-blood of all shelters. Basic upkeep such as rent, food, and veterinarian bills are expensive. While many shelters survive on volunteers, there are also full-time employees who work to ensure that a shelter is operational. Their salaries also factor into the financial mix.

    • 2

Donate items that shelters need. Products such as dog food, litter, bleach, paper-towels and garbage bags are in constant need in all shelters. Dropping off these items not only saves the shelter money, but also saves volunteers' time, as they do not need to leave the shelter to purchase them. Other items that are less in demand, but still helpful, include pet beds, toys and treats.

    • 3

Lend your time at a local animal shelter. Volunteer to walk dogs, clean kennels or assist in a clerical role. Hands-on volunteering tends to be even more rewarding than donating money, as you will be able to experience and witness first-hand the result of your work. You will usually be able to control the amount of time you lend and work around your current schedules.

    • 4

Organize events that raise the awareness of animal cruelty and pet overpopulation. Many puppies are in need because of people's disregard for controlling pet populations. Many pet owners who do not spay or neuter their pets tend to be unable to care for puppies that are born and end up dropping them off at shelters. Raising the awareness of responsible pet ownership can help spur change in the root problem. Whether it's getting stories in the local paper or holding fundraisers for shelters, creating public awareness helps puppies in need.

    • 5

Become a foster parent for an unwanted puppy. Since many animal shelters are crowded, fostering a pet can help make room for more animals in the shelter. Not only does fostering a pet allow you to care for a pet without taking on the full responsibility, you can help multiple pets by fostering a couple animals throughout the year.

Donate your skills to an animal shelter. If you have experience in construction or electrical services, you can assist in building a new addition onto an existing shelter or help with any repairs that are needed. If you have website design or promotional skills, you can offer to build a website for a shelter or perform advertising duties.
