How to Stop Illegal Dog Fighting

The game of illegal dog fighting can occur at any time and in any location, rural or urban. The harsh realities of dog-fighting activity using "man's best friend" has been shielded by an underground gaming industry that wishes to keep this form of animal cruelty a secret from the masses. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) provides media packages and other assistance to help spread the message against dog fighting and prevent it from happening in your neighborhood.

Instructions

    • 1

Alert your local law-enforcement officials about the problem. If you spot signs of dog fighting in your area, notify local officials so they can contact the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). Although law-enforcement officials are capable of handling the situation, the HSUS can provide advice and assistance on how to handle the potentially vicious dogs and will even offer a $5,000 reward for any information that leads to a dog-fighting conviction.

Post fliers in your neighborhood to raise awareness about the dog-fighting issue (see Resources). You can write letters to your county sheriff and local legislators, urging them to enforce animal fighting laws in your area. If you reside in a state where the dog-fighting penalties are less severe (New York, California and others), you may need to contact state officials to shed light on the problem.

Educate your family, friends and neighbors. The Humane Society has free, educational videos for anyone who wants to spread the awareness of dog fighting. Letting people view a firsthand account of the issue is a good way to stimulate action and motivate change. You can also distribute the fliers after the viewing party, while the issue is fresh on the minds of your viewers.
