How to Run on a Treadmill With a Dog

Dogs and owners both need exercise for a healthy lifestyle. While walking the dog outside is one option to get exercise, there are sometimes reasons why walking outside is not an option, such as bad weather conditions. In this situation, the best option is often using a treadmill and running with the dog.

Make sure the treadmill is large enough for both you and your dog. In general, large breed dogs and owners will not be able to stand on the same treadmill at the same time. Small and medium breed dogs might fit on the treadmill at the same time as the owner if the treadmill is large.

Place a carpet or rug behind the treadmill and position it away from the wall. The carpeting prevents injuries if the dog stops walking and slides off the back of the treadmill. Teach the dog to walk on the treadmill. Teaching methods vary by dog and the dog's temperament. Usually, dogs are placed on the treadmill and it is turned on to a slow speed. Gradually increase the speed as the dog learns to walk on the treadmill. Place the treadmill in a well ventilated area to prevent the dog from overheating.

Allow the dog to relieve itself before getting on the treadmill. The treadmill is used as a walking tool, but unlike when a dog goes on a walk outside, the dog will not be able to stop and go potty.

Put a leash on the dog. When running on a treadmill with the dog, using a leash makes the treadmill more like going for a real walk. Never tie the leash to the treadmill; only use the leash when you are on the treadmill with the dog.

Step onto the treadmill with the dog. Ideally, the dog should end up next to you rather than behind or in front of you. Start the treadmill slow and gradually work up to faster speeds.
