How to Make Capes for Miniatures

Miniature dogs are also known as toy dogs, and come in various breeds. Chihuahuas are one of the most popular small dog breeds; however, there are also miniature Dachshunds, English Toy Spaniels, Poodles, Yorkshire Terriers, Pekingese, Pomeranians and many other adorable, furry pets. Whether you just want to keep your pet warm or you want to dress him up or have him wear a costume for an occasion, making a cape in your color choice for him can do the trick.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the material, wrong-side-up, over your dog's back so it covers him from the collar down to near his tail, and so that it goes down to the dog's tummy. It may be helpful to have an assistant gently hold the dog still while you are figuring out the right dimensions.

    • 2

Mark the outline areas on the material. Cut away any excess material outside the outline markings. You should now have a rectangular piece of material. Try it on your dog to ensure it is the right fit and length you want. If you feel it is too long, trim some more material.

    • 3

Hem the fabric edges about 1/2 inch. Use a basting stitch all along the collar part of the cape, leaving approximately 4 inches of thread on each end.

    • 4

Gather the fabric by pulling on each thread end. Pin ribbon, cord or yarn onto the gathered material.

    • 5

Sew the cord or ribbon onto the gathered material with a needle and thread. See how well it fits your dog, and adjust as needed.
