Build a Simple Doghouse

If you do not want your dog to think of your house as its home, you may consider a home for it outside of your house. If you wish to build your pet a house, construct it in a safe manner. According to expert builder Kevin Ireland, you should build the house so that it is safe from the elements. For example, vent your dog's house. This will prevent overheating on a summer day due to lack of air. Make sure that the seams of the house are tight to avoid water or snow from invading the house.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your dog with a ruler. Take its main specifications, such as your animal's width and height. In getting the height measurements, measure your dog from the ground to where its neck and shoulders meet. Also, measure across the breast. Add two inches to those specifications for the width of the floor.

    • 2

Construct a floor plan based on your data. This is the information your will use in making your dog house. Design the house to be slightly larger than your dog, so that it will have room to stand up and comfortably move in and out.

    • 3

Build the base of the dog's house. Use a 2 x 4 or a 4 x 4 treated wood base. Make the frame, following the dimensions of the dog's house. Cut the floor 2 x 4s or 4 x 4s that make up the floor so that each opposite side is congruent, so that is a perfect rectangle.

    • 4

Frame the walls and the roof. Use 2 x 4s to construct the framing for the near and side walls. Nail or screw the framing together so that it is secure. Build center studs to offer strong support for your doghouse. Make sure the roof has hinges to make cleaning and changing the bedding easier.

    • 5

Using plywood, close in the walls. Then cut out an entrance for your pet.

    • 6

Place shingles on the roof. Staple them on your roof, loosely enough so that you can remove them if you wish to change them.

    • 7

Carpet your dog's new home. Place carpeting on the walls and on the floor for added heat and comfort.
