How to Travel With Pets on Trains

Traveling with pets can seem like a daunting experience. However, it doesn't have to be, if you give yourself enough time to prepare. Each form of transport has different rules, so it's important to know the facts before setting off on your journey. You can travel on a train with your pet dog, cat, bird or even lizard. But, you'll need to plan ahead to make it to your final destination safely, with pet in tow.

Instructions

  1. Preparation Before the Journey

    • 1

Check if your train operator allows pet travel. Almost all train companies allow guide dogs to accompany their owners on a train. However, some do not allow any other animal to travel.

    • 2

Inform the train operator when buying your ticket that you're traveling with your pet. He may have to book you into a specific carriage, away from food services, for health and safety reasons. Depending on the size of your animal, you may have to pay an extra charge or buy a special ticket for it to travel.

    • 3

Buy appropriate travel equipment. Your pet must be under your control, so it's important to have your dog on a lead, a bird in a cage and a cat in a carrier.

    • 4

Take your pet to the veterinarian. If you're planning a long train journey, your pet should be healthy enough to make the journey.

    On the Train

    • 5

Ask all fellow passengers in the train carriage if they are comfortable with your pet being there. If someone objects to your animal, then you have to be moved to a different carriage.

    • 6

Keep your pet under control. A pet that cannot fit in a carrier must be well-behaved. For example, a dog can't sit on a seat and must always be on a leash. You may need to put a muzzle on it, if the train operator tells you to.

    • 7

Check on your pet throughout the journey. Give it some exercise while the train is stopped at the different stations along the route. By giving your dog a few minutes to run around on the platform, it will get rid of excess energy.
