How to Prevent Pet Dander

Pet dander can be found in skin cells that come from your cat or dog. Additionally, dander can also be found in your pet's saliva. Like us, your pet's skin cells naturally regenerate and shed. Your pet also sometimes licks itself, causing the dander in its saliva to dry and stick to its skin. In turn, these dead skin cells wind up getting everywhere --- from your carpet to your furniture and more.

Many people are allergic to pet dander. Pet dander can cause itchy eyes, runny nose, eczema, coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath. One way to fight these symptoms is to prevent pet dander from entering and staying in your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a pet that does not shed. This will reduce the amount of dander in your home.

    • 2

Brush and bathe your pet regularly. This will help quickly remove and reduce the amount of dander on your pet. Make sure to do this outdoors.

    • 3

Talk to your veterinarian about adding nutrients or oils to your pet's diet. Adding nutrients or oils can help if your pet suffers from especially dry and flaky skin.

    • 4

Remove carpet and install hardwood flooring. Hardwood flooring is easier to keep clean and free of dander. Carpet can be hard to clean and traps dander.

    • 5

Vacuum and clean floors regularly. Clean and vacuum furniture.

    • 6

Use an air purifier. Air purifiers help trap dander. Use a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter for best results. Clean or replace the filter regularly.
