Key West, Florida, is a dog-friendly community, with hotels, tourist attractions and restaurants allowing visitors to bring their dogs along. Located at the southernmost tip of the United States, Key West boasts sunny skies and white beaches. Vacationers not wanting to leave behind four-legged members of the family can stay in one of several hotels on the key that allows dogs, as well as visit local attractions and restaurants.

    • Going on vacation and taking your dog doesn't mean you have to stay with relatives or friends. Key West resorts and hotels allow visitors to take advantage of the accommodations a large hotel offers while bringing the dog along.

      Banana Bay Resort is in the section of Key West known as "Old Town." Amenities at the resort include a swimming pool, a private beach, free breakfast and an on-site restaurant. According to Bring Fido, a website that provides information for travelers with dogs, Banana Bay allows guests to bring two dogs that are well-behaved.

      Sheraton Suites also welcomes pets. Located across from Smather's Beach, Sheraton Suites has 180 guest suites that have views of the beach, the courtyard or the pool. Other amenities include balconies in certain suites, free wireless Internet and refrigerators in the rooms. According to the Sheraton website, a dog up to 80 pounds is welcomed. Guests must tell the front desk when they check in about their pet and must leave a cell phone number. The hotel's policy states dogs are not allowed to be left in the room unattended.

    • Key West is full of outdoor activities, but several of them incorporate pets as well. Lazy Dog, for example, is a kayaking company that allows dogs on the trip for free. Guided kayak tours that last about two hours cost $35, while a four-hour tour is $60. Participants will explore Key West's back country while learning about its marine life and other inhabitants. Just like the humans, dogs will wear life vests while kayaking.

      For dogs looking to stretch their legs, Higgs Beach Dog Park has two sections, one for dogs under 25 pounds and one for dogs of any size. Guests of the park must follow some rules, including picking up after their dogs and accompanying their dogs at all times. Children younger than 6 years and puppies younger than 4 months are not allowed at the park. Dogs must be current on their vaccines as well, and pets must be well behaved. The park is open every day from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

    • When it's time to eat, Blue Heaven is one of several Key West restaurants that allows pets. The restaurant, on the west end of the key, is known for its roaming animals including chickens, cats and roosters. The eclectic restaurant is also known for its breakfast, with shrimp and grits on the same menu. Blue Heaven is open for lunch and dinner as well, and has a gift shop both online and at the restaurant.
