How to Measure for Sled Dog Booties

Sled dogs are exposed to extreme conditions, from biting cold to blinding blizzards. Even though sled dog breeds are bred for cold weather they can still get chilled and need booties on their feet to protect them from the extreme weather. Fortunately, you can buy or make your own dog booties out of polar fleece quite easily. However, you have to be sure the booties will fit your sled dog's feet snugly while not cutting off circulation.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the leash and collar around your dog's neck and tie the free end of the leash to a stable object, like a closed door. This will keep your dog from wandering away while you try to measure its feet.

    • 2

Lift up one of your dog's front paws and measure the length of the pad that touches the ground with the measuring tape. Write it down. Repeat with the other front paw.

    • 3

Draw the measuring tape around the dog's front foot at the widest point. Write the measurement down. Repeat with the other front paw.

    • 4

Lift your dog's hind leg and measure the length of the pad that touches the ground. Write it down and repeat with the other hind leg.

    • 5

Wrap the measuring tape around the dog's hind foot at the widest point and repeat with the other leg. Write each measurement down.
