Hunting for squirrels is a sport performed best with a squirrel dog. A squirrel dog is specifically bred and trained for squirrel hunting. Hunting with a squirrel dog is beneficial because without one a hunter needs to rely on his own senses to be successful in the hunt.

    • Although squirrel hunting may be accomplished with any breed of dog, the feist and cur dog breeds have the natural traits needed to hunt squirrels. According to Outdoor Alabama, these breeds have the best drive and desire to hunt squirrels.

    Training

    • A dog must have a good sense of smell in order to be a good squirrel hunter. A squirrel dog must become familiar with the scent of a squirrel at an early age. According to the Continental Kennel Club, "It makes it easier for the dog to pick up the scent when you begin to work with the juvenile animal on sight and smell."

    Traits

    • Hunting with a squirrel dog means the dog must have a good sense of sight and hearing. A successful squirrel dog will learn to watch and listen for animals in the woods. In addition, the dog will need to be able to move fast in order to catch the squirrel.
