How to Treat Yards & Dog Pens With Malathion Flea Dust

Killing any fleas that you might find on your dog will only cure part of the problem. The fleas will still likely be living in your yard and dog pen. Failing to treat these two locations will result in your dog becoming infested all over again. Malathion dust is effective against fleas and easier to apply than a spray. Michigan State University warns to only use a Malathion dust that is 5 percent or less. The dust can be sprinkled in your yard and dog pen once every six to eight weeks to keep the fleas away.

Instructions

    • 1

Dress in waterpoof gloves, long pants, long shirt and boots. Malathion dust should not be allowed to come in to contact with human skin. It could cause skin irritation.

    • 2

Measure your dog pen and yard in square feet. You will need this measurement in order to know how much malathion dust to spread out.

    • 3

Sprinkle 1 pound of malathion dust over every 500 square feet of space in your dog pen and yard. If you have 1,000 square feet to cover, then you would need 2 pounds of malathion dust. You can use a hand rotary duster to make the job a little easier.

    • 4

Wait a few hours for the malathion dust to settle before you allow your dog back out in the treated yard or dog pen.

    • 5

Wash all clothing in hot water immediately after applying the malathion dust.
