How to Apply Frontline Flea Medicine

Frontline protects dogs and cats against fleas and ticks. Without protection, your pet could potentially contract serious illnesses from the parasites, including Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Frontline safeguards your pet against these dangerous conditions, as long as it is applied properly. Fortunately, applying Frontline is usually quick and easy.

Open the Frontline container. To do this, bend the tab at the top of the package back until it opens. Once it is off, pull the foil back to reveal the green vial. Remove the vial from the package, then pull its tab backwards until it snaps off.

    • 2

Place your dog or cat in an area and position that makes application simpler. For instance, small dogs and cats can be placed on top of tables. Doing so may make it easier for you to reach the application areas and may help to keep the animal still. If your dog is too big to put on a table, place it in an area that is quiet and free from distractions. If your dog becomes interested in something else, it may be tempted to run away from you.

Spread apart the hair vertically at the shoulder blades so that you can see the pet's skin. You want to see about an inch of skin.

    • 4

Place the tip of the applicator onto the skin and squeeze the vial. Move the tip up and down the exposed skin to cover the entire area. Be sure to apply the Frontline directly to the skin---not the hair---or it won't work properly. Frontline is distributed by the oils in the skin and if it doesn't come in contact with the skin, it won't spread throughout the animal's body properly.

    • 5

Cover the exposed skin with the hair. Wash your hands. Avoid coming in contact with the application area until the Frontline has spread through the animal's skin, which usually takes about 24 hours.
