Dog Door Installation in a Garage

A dog door allows pets to go in and out of the house without the owner having to open doors for them. Many brands of dog doors are readily available at home improvement and discount retailers. Although the look of different brands of doors may vary, the basic installation is the same for each.

Using a screwdriver, remove the garage entry door from its hinges by popping out the pins that connect the door to the frame. Place the door on a solid work surface, such as across two saw horses. Wipe the door clean.

    • 2

Trace an outline of the dog door with a pencil where the opening will be on the garage door. Many dog doors have a traceable paper outline in the box. Make sure the outline is the right height for the size dog that will use the door---closer to the floor for small dogs and higher up for large dogs.

Use the jig saw to cut a hole using your line as a guide. Make sure to use the appropriate blade for your door. Different types of blades are needed for wooden, aluminum and fiberglass doors. Wipe dust away from your workspace.

    • 4

Place the front and back sides of the dog door assembly on opposite sides of the door. Screw (or snap, depending on brand) the two pieces in place.

    • 5

Hang the garage door back on its frame and secure using hinge pins. Attach the flap or door closure to the dog door by snapping it in place at the top of the dog door assembly.
