How to Purchase a Samoyed Puppy

Samoyed puppies typically make good family dogs and are fairly easy to care for. Samoyeds are usually gentle and easygoing and are a good choice for the first-time pet owner---the only high maintenance aspect of their care is grooming. With all of the breeders and pet stores advertising puppies, it can be hard to know where to get your Samoyed puppy. But if you're willing to do a little research, you can find the Samoyed meant for you.

Contact a Samoyed club for a breeder referral. Breed clubs typically promote high-quality breeding and refer only those breeders who participate in ethical breeding. Meet with the recommended breeder, and take a look at the puppies' environment. If it is clean and the dogs look like they are healthy and well cared for, you've most likely found a good breeder. However, if the breeder won't let you look at the puppies' parents or if the puppies' living conditions seem dirty and unkempt, move on to another breeder.

Contact a Samoyed rescue. Almost every state has a Samoyed rescue that is constantly looking for homes for its dogs. Some people have the misconception that Samoyed puppies that are in rescues are there because they are badly behaved or have issues, but this is not always the case. Samoyeds are placed in rescues for various reasons: some owners don't have the time to care for their dogs anymore, and others are forced to move and can't take their dogs with them. Just because a Samoyed comes from a rescue doesn't mean it has problems.

Visit your local animal shelter. Some people believe that purebred puppies are never available in animal shelters, but that's simply not true. While Samoyed puppies don't show up often in shelters, they are sometimes placed there. Someone might deliver a stray Samoyed and her litter of puppies to a shelter, or an owner may take a mother and pups to a shelter because he can't care for them or find homes for them. You may have to search a lot of shelters, but you may just find a Samoyed puppy at one.
