Dry the Area
-
If you come into contact with a spot of dog urine on the carpet or furniture that is still wet, blot the area with a dry cloth. Removing as much of the liquid as possible will help eliminate the bacteria in the urine that creates the smell. The most effective way to dry the area is to lay two or three paper towels over the spot and step on them with your foot. Repeat this process until you cannot get any more moisture on the towels.
Vinegar and Water Solution
-
To further remove the smell, mix vinegar and water to clean the area. The amount of each liquid depends on the size of the stain and the thickness of the carpet. Commonly used measurements include 1/2 cup of plain white vinegar with 1 cup of warm water. Apply the mixture to the stain on the carpet. Allow it to sit for 5 minutes, and then blot the area dry. Vinegar is powerful in removing dog urine odor due to its antibacterial properties.
Baking Soda
-
Sprinkle baking soda on the area after you have thoroughly cleaned it. This will help to absorb the odor, alleviating it from the room. Use just enough baking soda to lightly coat the entire stain. Combine a cup of hydrogen peroxide with a teaspoon of dish detergent. Spot test the mixture in an inconspicuous place to ensure it will not harm your carpet or fabric. If considered safe, apply the mixture to the baking soda. Work it all into the carpet with your fingers. Gloves should be warm to protect your skin. Once absorbed, allow to sit 5 to 10 minutes before rinsing the carpet with warm water.
