How to Elevate a Dog House

An elevated doghouse is a must-have, especially during the cold winter months. Elevation prevents water from seeping into a doghouse when it rains and helps to keep the snow out. Additionally, when a doghouse sits on the ground, it allows the warmth from your dog's body to escape through the floor and the cold ground temperature to seep in, causing your dog's shelter to be less effective. Elevating a doghouse creates air circulation that enables your dog to be more comfortable. There are many ways to elevate a doghouse, including setting it on a wooden pallet, cinder blocks or bricks.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the area where your doghouse will sit. Look for a flat, dry area away from ditches, ponds or spaces where rainwater often gathers.

    • 2

Lay a pallet flat on the ground, oriented in the same direction that the doghouse will face. Pallets are made to hold up to 2,500 pounds each and provide a sturdy, even base for a doghouse. Place the doghouse directly onto the center of the pallet.

Lay cinder blocks to elevate a doghouse. Measure the length and width of the doghouse with a measuring tape. Use your measurements to mark the area where the doghouse will sit, using four small lawn flags to identify where each corner will be. Position cinder blocks solid side down with the holes facing outward within this area. Pack the cinder blocks tightly together in even rows, leaving no space in between. Make your cinder block base slightly longer and wider than the doghouse for extra support. Last, place the doghouse on the center of the blocks.

Prop the doghouse up on bricks. Measure the length and width of the doghouse with a measuring tape. Use your measurements to mark the area where the doghouse will sit, using four small lawn flags to identify each corner. Place bricks solid side down in rows within the area you've marked, making sure to cover the area evenly. Then, place the doghouse on the center of the bricks.
