At What Age Will My Puppy Eyes Stay Its Color?

If your puppy's eyes are currently a deep blue color, don't assume that they'll necessarily stay that way for long. All wee puppies enter the world with baby blues, but at the same time, few adult dogs sport the light color. It takes young canine eyes a little while to settle into their permanent shade.
  1. Closed Eyes

    • If a puppy is straight out of his mama's womb, his eyes will remain a mystery for a little while yet, so be patient. After all, newborn puppies are born with eyes that are completely sealed shut, the same as their ear canals. Their eyes generally begin to open up once they're in the realm of 10 to 14 days in age. This process is a gradual, rather than an instant one. The little peepers begin opening from the nose region. Puppy ears usually open up shortly after the eyes -- think somewhere from 13 to 17 days in age.

    First Eye Color

    • The first eye color you observe in your adorable puppy is most likely not going to be permanent, so don't get too attached to it, lovely as it might be. In this early stage, their pure baby blues are usually all one color, and it's also usually impossible to make out the outline of the pupils.

    Permanent Color Emergence

    • Once your growing cutie is roughly 4 weeks in age, you can expect to start noticing some hints of his future eye color, whether a rich chocolate brown, icy crystal blue or other shade. Although you might start seeing the development of new color, it also might take between 9 and 12 more weeks for it all to finalize. At the 4-week point, puppy vision usually also starts to formulate a harmonious relationship with hearing, as well.

    Eyes and Health

    • Whether your pooch ends up with brown, blue or golden eyes, one thing is certain: Alert and clear eyes are often a sign of a pet who is in glowing physical condition. If your puppy is healthy -- and feeling that way -- her eyes will probably show it. Other strong indications of a puppy that is doing well health-wise are round bellies and glossy and thick fur. Don't pay attention only to the color of your precious pet's eyes, but also to their overall vitality in general.
