Obedience Training
-
Whether you choose to compete in obedience competitions or not, obedience training helps build a strong relationship between you and your dog. In obedience training, you teach your dogs to perform certain behaviors in response to commands. Some basic examples include sit, stay, come and speak. If you choose to compete, judges will watch you and your dog and score you based on the accuracy and precision of your commands and your dogs reaction. At advanced levels of competition, your dog must work off leash and respond to silent commands and signals in addition to obeying basic commands. The American Kennel Club offers obedience trails or you can check with local organizations.
Agility Courses
-
If your dog is energetic and athletic, you might enjoy running agility courses. Your dog must follow your commands and direction as he runs through an obstacle course consisting of jumps, weave poles, tunnels and other obstacles. You must complete the course within the time frame set for the course and any mistakes will count as faults against your score. Even if you prefer not to compete, practicing agility is also a way to play with your dog while teaching him to follow your signals and commands.
Hunting
-
Many breeds, including retrievers, pointers and hounds, enjoy helping you hunt. Depending on the breed and training, your dog can track and locate game and retrieve small game. Hunting allows you to work as a team while giving your dog the opportunity to do the job he was bred for. You can also find hunting related field events through organizations such as the United Kennel Club. These events simulate a hunt without actually killing any game.
Jogging and Hiking
-
All dogs need exercise to maintain good health and fitness. Exercising with your dog on a jog or hike gives you quality time together. Try taking different routes and trying new parks and hikes and take advantage of the opportunity to meet other joggers and hikers and their dogs.
Water Sports
-
Many dogs love playing in the water. If you live near water, try swimming, canoeing or boating for a chance to enjoy the water, exercise and bond with your dog. If you live near the ocean, teach your dog to paddle board or surf with you. Take safety precautions, such as life vests, if you are in the waves or deep water.
