How to Measure for Pet Clothes

Buying clothes for your dog can be confusing if you do not know your dog's size. Most dog clothes sizes are based on the length of the dog. Because of this, measuring the length of your dog correctly is important to finding the right size. In addition to accurately measuring your dog, manufacturer guidelines for dog clothing can vary, so it is important to also look at the manufacturer's sizing guidelines.

Have your dog stand up. Measurements taken when your dog is sitting or lying down may not be accurate.

Measure your dog from the base of the neck to the base of its tail. This is the length. Generally, dogs whose length measures between 10 and 12 inches are small. Those who measure 14 to 16 inches are medium, and those who measure 18 to 20 inches are large. For smaller and larger measurements, refer to the "Tips" attached to this article.

Order the next size up if your dog falls between measurements.

Measure your dog from the tip of the small pads on the bottom of its feet to the end of the big pad. This will help you find your dog's boot size. Unless they are very long, do not include the length of your dog's nails in this measurement.
