Traveling With Miniature Schnauzers

Traveling with any dog can test your patience, but miniature schnauzers can be quite well-behaved as a breed. Miniature schnauzers have strong personalities but follow commands well. Miniature schnauzers are not typically aggressive or deliberately destructive. However, they can be hyper until they are about three years old. If you are traveling with your miniature schnauzer, there are a few precautions and considerations you should take before setting out on your trip.

Fill a small bag or backpack with items you will need: a first aid kit, leash, toys, bowls, snacks and brush. Keep veterinary records with you as you travel as well, so that if your miniature schnauzer gets ill on the trip the local vet has access to his health records. Keep some plastic bags handy for when you stop to take the dog potty. You will need to clean up any messes your dog makes. Pack his food and bottled water. Make sure your dog's ID tags are attached to his collar and up-to-date, with a contact number for your cell phone or vacation destination.

Purchase a dog carrier that is large enough for your dog to stand up, turn around and lie down in comfortably. Secure the carrier with the seat belt in the back seat of the car or put it in the floor. If your miniature schnauzer is getting anxious or irritable, stop the car and take her for a walk. A walk will release tension built up by the breed's natural urge to run and play. A walk also gives your dog a chance to go potty and have a meal and water. If your miniature schnauzer is not comfortable with the travel carrier and is well behaved enough to sit in the seat, use a seat belt designed for dogs to keep him safe in the event of an accident.

Take time to rest after you arrive at your destination. Your miniature schnauzer will be tired and maybe irritable. Allow your dog a couple hours of rest. If your hotel has a doggy spa, treat your miniature schnauzer to a massage or soothing bath. This will help calm the dog as well as give you a short break away from your miniature schnauzer to do activities where dogs may not be allowed. Take the opportunity to go shopping at local gift shops, treat yourself to lunch at a cafe, or even get your own spa treatment.
