Invisible Fence Complaints

Invisible fences are excellent tools to protect your dogs while still allowing the dogs to run around freely in your lot for some much needed play and exercise. Most of the time invisible fences cost less than building bulky fences in your front or backyard. Invisible fences are relatively safe as well. However, there are still possible dangers to invisible fences if you do not purchase the good quality kind and if you use the fence improperly. Customers express some common complaints about invisible fences.
  1. Malfunctioning Dog Collars

    • One of the major problems of invisible fences are their tendency to malfunction. Should the collar of your dog short out or encounter a malfunction, your dog may get burned or even electrocuted. In some cases, your dog's electric collar could constantly shock your dog, and it could become aggressive in just minutes. The dog collar can also send electrical charges to anyone who attempts to remove it while it is shorting out.

    Altered Dog Behavior

    • The electric jolts that are emitted from the collar when a dog approaches the invisible fence are normally more than enough to keep the dog from crossing the boundaries. Some dogs, however, may cross the boundary despite the electric jolt and will then refuse to come back out of fear of experiencing another jolt. In addition, breeds such as Golden Retrievers tend to have a very high resistance to pain, so they are easily injured because they will not heed the warning right away. For other dogs the emission of jolts can cause anxiety and may lead to extreme behavior patterns.

    Changing Batteries

    • Collars need batteries, and if the batteries are not changed regularly, your dog may have a difficult time understanding the boundaries of the invisible fence. For dogs to learn, they need consistent training. If they experience shock at a certain period and then zero shock afterwards, it will not reinforce their behavior, which defeats the purpose of the invisible fence.

    Stray Animals

    • Another common problem with invisible fences is that they do not keep stray animals away from your property. If your pet is confined in your yard and an aggressive animal enters your property, your dog may not have a chance to successfully escape from the predator. Furthermore, even if your dog has a collar, any human can enter your property and steal your dog.
