Paying Summer Jobs for Kids that Involve Dogs

Obtaining a summer job is an excellent way for kids to stay active, gain needed responsibility and learn to manage money. If you are an animal-loving kid, finding a job working with dogs would be rewarding in ways both tangible and intangible. If there's no such employer nearby, maybe you could create your own summer dog business in your neighborhood.
  1. Dog Walker

    • When walking dogs for clients, you need to decide how many dogs you are able to handle at once. It is also a good idea to contact city hall to find out about local dog walking laws, such as scooping a dog's waste during the walk. A good potential client would be people who live in apartments, especially older people who would welcome such help or people who work full-time but don't want their pet to be cooped up in the house all day. After you locate clients, set a daily walking schedule and fee. During the walk, stay in a familiar area for safety and carry an extra leash. Provide a water bowl and carry a bottle of water and perhaps snacks for the dogs. Since dogs must exercise daily, be prepared to walk in bad weather also.

    Dog Groomer

    • Providing light grooming such as brushing and shampooing is an excellent job for kids. You may want to enlist the assistance of a friend, especially if you encounter a feisty dog. You will need a bucket large enough for the dog to fit into. Fill the bucket with warm water and lather the dog with special pet shampoo. You may want to use a sponge to scrub the dog's fur or use your hands. When finished, rinse all the lather off with a water hose. Be prepared to get wet once the dog starts to shake off the excess water. For a special touch, place a decorative bow in the dog's hair, or tie a kerchief around its neck. A spritz of doggie "perfume" will leave the pooch smelling fresh when returned to the owner.

    Pet Sitter

    • When pet owners go out of town, they often search for a pet sitter instead of boarding their dog at al kennel. They want to keep the dog comfortable and in its natural surroundings. When searching for a pet sitting job, let the client know that you are responsible. You may want to visit the home a few times before the owners leave town, to allow the dog to become comfortable with you. Ask the owners to record the dog's usual feeding and elimination schedule. Be prompt when pet sitting, so the dog will not become anxious waiting for you and have an unwanted accident.
