How to Make Couch Covers for Dogs

If your dog has a habit of drooling, shedding, eating or peeing on your couch, a couch cover can save your sofa. Already-manufactured covers, however, can range from $30 to $170, which can be a bit pricey for many pet owners, depending on the quality of the cover. So if you want to pamper your pooch and protect your sofa at the same time, you can make a couch cover for your dog easily and cheaply.

Instructions

  1. Make the Cover

    • 1

Measure the length and the height of your couch, according to an article entitled, "How To Make A Couch Cover," on http://www.ILoveIndia.com. Measure the front of the couch from the top to the sitting area, allowing for the cushions, and from the sitting area to the floor or the bottom of the couch. Measure the height from the top of your couch to the floor, or to the bottom of your couch in the back, unless you do not want your cover to drape over the back when finished.

    • 2

Buy enough material according to cover your couch. To make a 72-inch by 55-inch cover, for example, purchase 2 1/4 yards of polar fleece and 2 yards of canvas for a 72-inch x 55-inch cover, for example, according to Erika Kern at http://www.craftstylish.com. Spread the fleece on the floor and the canvas on top of the fleece so that both fabrics are square. Cut the selvage off the ends, and trim the canvas two inches shorter than the fleece on all sides.

    • 3

Decide how you're going to quilt your couch cover, whether you're going to follow an existing pattern on the canvas, or whether you're going to quilt in a grid pattern. Safety pin the canvas to the fleece according to the sewing line you intend to follow.

    • 4

Don your quilting gloves and begin quilting the fabric, canvas side up, from the center, working toward the edges, following the quilting pattern you've safety pinned.

    • 5

Spread the finished quilted material on the floor and trim one inch of the edge off the fleece so that you have one remaining inch of fleece extending beyond the canvas on all sides. Fold the one inch of fleece up and over the edge of the canvas and pin on all sides, using straight pins. Sew around the pinned edges, using a 5/8 inch seam allowance.

Cover the couch, tucking the material in behind the cushions and letting the ends fall over the armrests, the sitting area and the back.
