How to Clean Dog Urine Stains

Even the most housebroken dog will have an accident and when it does your best defense against stains and odor setting in is to clean up the urine as soon as it happens. It is especially important to remove the odor. Once the dog has urinated, the familiar smell can encourage the dog to repeat the mistake. Natural products work well with little expense and no toxicity.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper towels
  • Rag and towels
  • Distilled white vinegar
  • Bucket or bowl
  • Baking soda
  • Three percent hydrogen peroxide
  • Natural dish soap
  • Wet or dry vac

      Locate the urine. Place a thick wad of paper towels or cloth on top of the urine and step down with your foot. Press down hard to wick up the liquid. Dispose of the towel. Place another dry towel on the same spot. Step down, and repeat the process until you no longer see a wet spot on the towel.

      Create a solution of three parts warm water to one part distilled white vinegar in a in a bucket or bowl. Saturate the area with the solution, and allow it to work for up to five minutes. Place another clean dry towel over the spot and step on it to wick up the solution. Alternatively, use a wet vac or shop vac to suck up the solution from the carpet.

      Apply baking soda over the area by shaking it liberally from the box. The powder will neutralize the odor and absorb moisture. Allow the baking soda to sit and leave it there for the next step.

      Prepare a solution of 1/2 cup of three percent hydrogen peroxide with one teaspoon natural dish soap in a small bowl. Take a towel and saturate it, then work the solution into the area. Leave it on the area for up to two hours.

      Vacuum the area once the mixture of baking soda, peroxide and soap has dried. Repeat as necessary to remove all residue.
