How to Build an Indoor Dog Ramp

An indoor ramp can provide access for a smaller or older dog to couches or beds. The ramps not only allow the dog to get on the couch or bed without human assistance but offer the dogs a way to return to the floor without jumping and possibly injuring their backs or legs. Commercial ramps are available, but a do-it-yourselfer can complete the project with modest tools and skills.

Things You'll Need

  • 1- by 4-inch lumber (approximately 20 feet)
  • 5/8-inch plywood (quarter sheet)
  • Power saw

Instructions

Determine the size of the ramp. Measure the height of the beds or couches in the home. If the dog is capable of a small step, the height of the ramp can be 3 or 4 inches less than the height of the bed or couch. The horizontal length of the ramp should be at least twice the height of the ramp.

Cut the 1- by 4-inch pine boards for the frame. Cut two pieces for the base the length of the ramp. Cut two pieces the height of the ramp for the upright. Fasten one of the uprights to one end of each of the base pieces at a right angle with 1 1/4-inch deck or drywall screws. Measure the distance between the top of upright and the opposite end of the base and cut two pieces to that length.

Fasten the top of the triangle to the base and frame. Position the top of the triangle to the top of the board is flush with the point of the upright closest to the couch and the bottom of the opposite end of the base. Attach together with the 1 1/4-inch deck or drywall screws. Cut off any portions of the base, upright or top board that extend beyond the three sides of the triangle.

Cut a piece of 5/8-inch plywood to serve the ramp surface. The width of the ramp surface can vary from about 6 inches for a small dog to 18 inches for larger dogs. Fasten the plywood to the triangles with 1 1/4-inch deck or drywall screws. Add braces between the two triangle frames for stability. Use 1- by 4-inch pine lumber and the 1 1/4 inch deck screws. Place two braces, one at the bottom and one near the middle, across the end of the frame closest to the couch. Add one brace between the two frames at the base every 8 to 12 inches. Braces are not necessary under the plywood for small or medium-sized dogs but can be added for larger animals.

Paint the frame to match the existing decor of the room where it will be used. Cover the surface of the ramp with carpet. Use carpet remnants from the room if possible.
