How to Collect Dog Waste

Dog waste is not a pleasant topic, but removing it from our surroundings is essential to human health and sanitation. There are millions of pets in large populated areas, and this waste can add up to a significant volume and hazard if left to accumulate. Dog waste contains parasites, bacteria, and organic matter responsible for diarrhea, salmonellosis, and even round-worm transmission from pet to human. It can degrade water quality and create excess odors and insects. Collecting pet waste properly proper is an effective barrier against potential health and environmental hazards.

Pick up dog waste when it happens or as soon as you can after by encasing your hand in a plastic bag and use your hand to pick it up. Keep your hand covered at all times, and then turn the bag inside out to release your hand and to move the bag securely over the waste. Tie a knot in the bag and throw it in the trash. Alternatively, dog waste can be flushed down a park toilet or home toilet (if you're willing to bring it in the house). Throw the bag in the trash after; it is not to be flushed.

Take a standard two-piece pooper scooper to the area where your dog has defecated. Hold the pooper scooper's receptacle handle in one hand and the small shovel or rake handle in the other. Move the dog waste into the receptacle by pushing it with the shovel or rake tool. Lift the receptacle portion of the scooper while continuing to hold it by the handle and empty it into a trash can. Alternatively, empty the receptacle into a plastic bag. Tie a knot in the bag and dispose of the bag into a trash can.

Secure a professional dog waste cleanup service to come to your home and collect the accumulated dog waste by looking online or in the Yellow Pages under "Pooper Scooper Services" in your area. Allow them to take care of your entire yard's dog waste. Hire the service according to your needs and ability to pay, such as once per week, one time only or year-round, monthly visits. Tell them the location of your dog's favorite spots to eliminate in the yard. Ask them if they include special services, such as the use of anti-microbial solutions to eliminate cross contamination between customers' yards.
